Artist Carlos Sena is honored at the 24th FICA

Sculpture São Pedro Atendei das Nossas Preces served as a reference for the Festival's visual identity and will appear on posters and banners.

The visual artist and professor at the Federal University of Goiás Carlos Sena is one of the honorees of the 24th edition of the International Environmental Film and Video Festival (FICA). The sculpture São Pedro Atendei das Nossas Preces was chosen to illustrate the visual identity of FICA 2023. The work – which dialogues with environmental themes, as it addresses the issue of water, scarcity and its social importance – belongs to the Cultural Center's collection Federal University of Goiás (UFG) and was part of the artist's solo exhibition held in 2004 at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Goiás.

“The image is a detail that clearly displays the artist's operations in the construction of the work that makes reference to the lack of rain and drought, bringing together poetic arguments from popular culture, associating simple elements taken from everyday life, discussing the relationships of balance that sustain the environment. By addressing water scarcity, the work becomes universal, posing an environmental problem of international scope that affects the future of humanity”, explains art researcher and visual artist Divino Sobral, who signed the text of the FICA 2023 catalog .

The promotional material was developed by designer Eduardo França, from Intangível Design Studio. Carlos Sena's image will appear on posters and banners and will be published on the website, social media profiles and in the event catalogue.

The tribute to the artist Carlos Sena is justified because he is a very important name in the arts in general in Goiás. Sena worked for 25 years as a professor at the Faculty of Visual Arts at UFG, having been an active agent in the creation of two cultural facilities of great importance to the University and society – the FAV Art Gallery, which he directed from its implementation until 2006; and the UFG Cultural Center, which he directed for ten years until his death.

FICA has maintained this tradition for several years of choosing an artist from Goiás – plastic artist, visual artist – to honor in each of its editions. It is a way of creating a dialogue between audiovisual and other artistic languages and of valuing other languages in the culture of Goiás. This has been done and in some editions artists were asked to develop a specific work that could illustrate a poster or on other occasions it was a work by the artist was used as the basis for the Festival’s visual identity.

The 24th FICA will be held between the 13th and 18th of June 2023, in the city of Goiás. Promoted by the Government of Goiás, through the State Secretariat for Culture (Secult), co-organized by the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), through the Educational Radio and Television Foundation (FRTVE). The event also has a partnership with the State Secretariat for Resumption, Goiás Social, State University of Goiás (UEG), Federal Institute of Goiás (UFG), Social Service of Commerce (Sesc) and City Hall of the city of Goiás.
