Squares

Praça do Coreto

How about some Cerrado fruit ice cream (murici, cajá, jabuti caba, cagaita and pitanga), in the best-known square in the city of Goiás? Located in the middle of the city's historic center and listed as a world heritage site by Unesco, Praça do Coreto, with its wooden benches, is the ideal place for those who want to relax and enjoy the view, to the sound of the waters of the Ribeirão Vermelho.

An obligatory stop for anyone visiting the former capital, Praça do Coreto is a traditional spot for shows and cultural events, including those at the Goiás State International Environmental Film and Video Festival. The bandstand was built in the 20th century, in the art nouveau style and adds a touch of softness to the bucolic and centuries-old landscape.

Praça Dr. Tasso de Camargo or Praça do Coreto was a meeting place for rulers, colonels and people who were part of the upper classes, such as doctors and military personnel. They met for rallies and social gatherings, and sometimes to announce important facts. There are several bars and snack bars in the square. Opposite the square is the Cathedral of Sant'Ana.

Churches

Matriz de Sant’Anna

Built in 1727, demolished and rebuilt in 1743, remaining to this day. After demolitions and reconstructions, throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, in 1929, a project signed by the architect from Rio de Janeiro, Gatão Bahiana, emerged. However, with the financial crisis of that period, the work was never completed. From 1967 onwards, it was opened to the public again, when it received a finishing work and stained glass windows, becoming the largest church in the Historic Center. It is closed for renovation.

It functioned as a cathedral and today houses a very blessed sacred collection, with works by the sculptor Veiga Valle, silverware, furniture and sacred works. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the Historic Center. It is the only religious building in the city with characteristic Baroque elements, mainly inside.

The old black church was built in 1714, a landmark of racial segregation in the history of the old capital. Rebuilt by Dominican priests in the 1920s, in the same place where the former church of the Brotherhood of Our Lady of the Rosary of Black Men existed, the current Igreja do Rosário differs from the group of buildings in the old capital as it has completely different architectural characteristics. A neo-Gothic building, with a single centralized tower that can be seen from across the region, its interior features a set of frescoes created by the Italian priest Frei Nazareno Confaloni.

Our Lady of Aparecida Church

The Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora Aparecida is located in the town of Areias and hosts the Pilgrimage of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, which takes place annually in the first fortnight of October. The Church of Nossa Senhora Aparecida, built in 1910, is located on a hill on the banks of the GO-070 highway, in Povoado de Areias, a few kilometers from the Cidade de Goiás. The little church usually enchants tourists who stop to learn a little about the history of the chapel, from where it is possible to have a beautiful view of the Serra Dourada.

The staircase is made with typical stones from the region. The curious thing is that the building has the same proportions as the floor plant of the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo de Estremoz, in the Alentejo region, in Portugal, completed in 1562. It is not yet known, due to lack of documentation, what is the reason for the similarity . The sunset seen from the top of the church became an attraction among residents and tourists. It is closed for renovation.

Monuments

Largo do Chafariz

Another monument much appreciated for its architectural beauty is the Chafariz de Cauda da Boa Morte, built in 1778. The purpose was to share the city's water supply with the already existing Chafariz da Carioca. The term “Chafariz de Cauda” (Tail Fountain) is used because the aqueduct that supplies it resembles an enormous tail, in its posterior part. “Boa Morte” (Good Death) refers to the Chapel of the same name, belonging to the Brotherhood of Black Men, located on land immediately behind the place where the Fountain is located.

Built in stone masonry, with details in soapstone, the fountain has, in its central body, the spouts that supplied water to the population, as well as two tanks for animals, on the outside.

Its structure is organized to present four bodies, in addition to the central one, arranged in such a way that, together with the front protection grille, they create an internal courtyard of irregular hexagonal shape, with benches carved in stone, with the likely objective of providing comfort to those who use the waterspouts.

Important details in its decoration are the pinnacles that have different designs depending on their location in the monument, as well as volutes and other elements that aim to keep with the rococo taste. In its upper part, there is also a shield carved in soapstone, which reads: “Ordered by the Chamber of this Town, the Governor and Captain General Illustrious José de Almeida Vasconcelos Soveral e Carvalho e Ovd. General Judge Antônio José de Almeida. Year 1778”. (Text by Gustavo Neiva Coelho, published by IPHAN). The fountain is located in Dr. Praça Brasil Caiado, the largest in the city.

Chafariz da Carioca

The Largo da Carioca fountain was the first public water supply source built in Vila Boa, at the beginning of its establishment as a mining center. Built in stone masonry, this fountain is located in a wide open space between the Rio Vermelho and the old entrance to the city for those coming from São Paulo along the Royal Road.

Cruz do Anhanguera

The Anhanguera Cross is part of a monument, located on the banks of the Rio Vermelho, close to the Casa de Cora Coralina Museum.

It is a replica of the original cross, which is on display at the Museu das Bandeiras. The place is very popular during the day and at night, when musical performances take place.

In 1918, the late writer and poet Luis do Couto brought the Cruz do Anhanguera to the Cidade de Goiás. It was installed on the banks of the Rio Vermelho where the Lapa church once stood, washed away by the great flood of 1839.

In the flood of December 31, 2001, this monument was washed away by the current. Days later, the Cruz do Anhanguera was found inside the bed of the Rio Vermelho and restored (Source: Portal Cidade de Goiás).

Coreto do Jardim

The current Bandstand was built during the administration of Mayor Lincoln Caiado de Castro, in 1923. Designed by Dr. Wiaker Sócrates do Nascimento. Located in Dr. Tasso Camargo square, in the old Largo da Matriz.

Ruins of Ouro Fino (Chico Mineiro)

Near Calcilândia, 18 kilometers from the Cidade de Goiás, are the Ruins of Arraial de Ouro Fino, one of the first settlements in the State of Goiás, founded by Bartolomeu Bueno da Silva Filho, in 1727, at the time of the search for gold on the Uru River and Córrego de Praia.

Ouro Fino was the stage for the legendary story of Chico Mineiro. The character immortalized in music, which was the first big success of the country duo Tonico and Tinoco, which is part of the culture and imagination of the people of Goiás. A cross, in the middle of an open field, towards Pedreira de São Sebastião, marks the place where Largo da Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pilar de Ouro Fino stood. Weeds and grass blend into the foundations of the old building. There are remains of mud in the exact location of the church and bell tower.

Studies are being carried out on the possibility of preserving the memory of the place, which holds much of the history of Goiás. The proposal is to transform the ruins into an important stopping point for cyclists and walkers, boosting the economy and generating jobs in the region.

Technology can contribute to the reconstruction of the history of the Ouro Fino church. One of the ideas is to work on a 3D computer graphics project of the original church and play it in augmented reality.
