João Moreira Salles will participate in the 24th FICA

The filmmaker and writer is participating in the Festival for the first time and will give a conference on the Amazon and will then participate in a chat.

Documentary filmmaker and writer João Moreira Salles will participate in the 24th edition of the International Environmental Film and Video Festival (FICA), which will be held from June 13 to 18, in the city of Goiás. Salles will participate in the conversation Arrabalde: Brazil and Amazon, on the day 17 (Saturday), at 10:30 am, at Cine Teatro São Joaquim, when he will talk about the Amazon, based on a six-month experience living in the forest, in the state of Pará, which resulted in the book Arrabalde – In Search of the Amazon, released in December last year, by Companhia das Letras.

One of the biggest names in Brazilian documentaries, João Moreira Salles approached the environmental issue when he spent time in Pará, in 2019, and wrote a series of reports for the magazine Piauí called Arrabalde, which later became the book Arrabalde – Em Busca da Amazon. Since then, Salles has been involved in discussions that deal with the Amazon and the environment.

During the chat at FICA 2023, he will talk about the Amazon and, afterwards, he will participate in a chat, which will be led by filmmaker Pedro Novaes, who is FICA's artistic coordinator. “He has a not very extensive filmography, he made few films, but all of his films are references to Brazilian documentaries”, highlights Novaes.

This is the first time he will participate in FICA. In 2018, the latest film made by the filmmaker, No Intenso Agora, was shown during a special screening. On that occasion, the person who represented the film during FICA was Eduardo Escorel, who is the film's editor. The political documentary brings together a series of different events that took place in the 1960s, in various parts of the world, such as Paris, Prague, China and the Soviet Union.

The 24th FICA will be held between the 13th and 18th of June 2023, in the city of Goiás. Promoted by the Government of Goiás, through the State Secretariat for Culture (Secult), co-organized by the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), through the Educational Radio and Television Foundation (FRTVE). The event also has a partnership with the State Secretariat for Resumption, Goiás Social, State University of Goiás (UEG), Federal Institute of Goiás (UFG), Social Service of Commerce (Sesc) and City Hall of the city of Goiás.
