Glicéria Tupinambá
Also known as Célia Tupinambá, she was born and raised in Serra do Padeiro, in the Tupinambá Indigenous Land of Olivença, Bahia. She is pursuing a master's degree in the Postgraduate Program in Social Anthropology at UFRJ.
In 2006, after the Tupinambá people reclaimed their lands in Serra do Padeiro, Célia decided to make the first Tupinambá Mantle, to thank the Enchanted. The crafting of the cloaks is literally sewn in to the history of the territory, its daily life, its memory – including what is being done now, in 2024.
The fight for the land. Researching the records of travelers, religious people and painters from the 16th and 17th centuries; the conversation with the Tupinambá Cloak kept in the reserve of the Quai du Branly Museum (France); learning jereré stitches from her aunt and godmother; listening to the elderly. Rituals for the non-human inhabitants of Serra do Padeiro. Researching on ancestral cloaks in the European museums. The recovery of the territory, with the preservation of the forests and the return of the animals, birds, insects. Célia's dreams and those dreamed by her relatives. All of this forms the mantles.
In 2021, the mantle took the central stage in the exhibition Kwá yapé turusú yuriri assojaba tupinambá | This is the great return of the Tupinambá mantle, at Funarte Brasília. More recently, Célia was the winner of the 10th edition of the ZUM/IMS Photography Scholarship with the project "Nós somos pássaros que andam". The work, created in dialogue with Mariana Lacerda and Patrícia Cornils, is part of the exhibition "Entre nós: dez anos de Bolsa ZUM/IMS".
